Presbyopia

Presbyopia is an eye disease that harms the patient's ability to focus on close objects. This happens naturally as people get older, and it can be a highly frustrating condition. However, blurry vision caused by presbyopia can be treated by wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses. It's also possible to get eye surgery for it. if you are looking for senior eye care in Scranton, PA, Hazleton, PA, Kingston, PA, or Wilkes Barre, PA, the eye care professionals at Engle Eyewear are ready to assist you.

Symptoms of Presbyopia

If you find that you are holding things far away from your eyes to read them, you might have presbyopia. You may also find that the reading distance that you're used to results in words being blurry. If you try reading or seeing something close up and get a headache or eyestrain from it, these are clear symptoms of presbyopia. You might also find that these problems get even worse in low light.

Causes of Presbyopia

The main cause of this condition is aging. As people get older, the lens of their eyes hardens. With less flexibility,  the lens cannot change its shape to focus on close things. This causes those items to look blurry because they're not in focus.

Risk Factors

If you are over 40, you are at the highest risk for this condition. Other conditions that increase your risk of developing presbyopia include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Diuretics, allergy medications, and antidepressants can all make you more likely to develop presbyopia.
