Keep Your Eyes Comfortable With Regular Breaks

Many of us spend long hours for work or leisure, using digital devices. This prolonged focusing at short distances is hard on our eyes and can cause a condition called digital eye strain.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain can present itself in many different ways, from general fatigue to symptoms similar to dry eye. It can also cause your eyes to water excessively, or cause headaches and sore muscles.

It is essential to recognize these symptoms as they occur and seek treatment before the problem worsens.

Causes of Digital Eye Strain

A variety of factors can cause digital eye strain. When we’re using digital devices, we blink less than we usually would, sometimes up to half as much as we usually do.

Additionally, when we are using digital devices (especially smartphones), we tend to hold them close to our eyes and at a less-than-ideal angle.

We also develop poor posture when sitting at a computer for hours or hunched over a tablet, and indoor air circulation can irritate the eyes.

Diagnosing & Treating Digital Eye Strain

The best way to combat digital eye strain is to keep an eye out for symptoms. If you notice your eyes are feeling tired, or you’re having trouble shifting your focus, take a break.

The 20-20-20 Rule

Giving your eyes a rest after using a digital device for an extended amount of time helps reduce strain on your eyes.

The 20-20-20 rule is great to remember to take that much-needed break; every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to focus on something 20 feet away.

Keep a Proper Distance

The best way to focus on a digital device is to have them angled slightly downward from your face and around 24 to 28 inches away. Additionally, reducing any glare from lights or windows, as well as keeping your screen brightness up, will help to prevent strain.

If you would like to have a more in-depth conversation about digital eye strain and what you can do to keep your eyes happy and healthy, please book an appointment.
