Dry eye affects 4.88 million people in the United States every day. If your eyes are gritty and tired, and nothing you try seems to help, then you may have chronic dry eyes.
Chronic dry eye can be caused or exacerbated by a variety of factors, including environmental conditions, excessive digital screen use, and contact lens use. However, it can also be caused by tear production issues.
The best way to understand your symptoms is to visit us for a comprehensive eye exam so we can address the root cause of your dry eyes, give you the proper guidance, and provide you with the management options and support you need.
Dry eyes can have a variety of root causes, including lifestyle and environmental factors. It can also occur when our eyes aren’t able to produce enough tears to meet our needs, or the tears we do produce are lacking a critical ingredient. Once we have pinpointed the root cause of your dry eyes, we can create a tailored treatment or management plan to provide you with relief.
The most common causes of chronic dry eyes are inadequate tear production and poor quality tears. Your tear glands may be draining faster than they can produce, or the tears they do produce may be poor quality. Poor-quality tears typically lack meibum (an oily compound that prevents our tears from evaporating too quickly).
Beyond your eyes just not performing as well as they should, some external conditions may cause dry eyes. The good news is if you are experiencing dry eye as a direct result of these causes, treating the root cause should relieve your symptoms.
Certain medications, especially beta-blockers or diuretics, can cause your body to get rid of excess water and may lead to dry eyes. Additionally, dry climates can cause your tears to evaporate faster, leading to dry eyes.
Various conditions or diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause dry eyes.
There are a few different ways to treat dry eye. However, it’s always best to get a professional opinion before administering any sort of medication, including eye drops.
Punctal plugs are tiny flexible plugs that are inserted into the eye’s tear ducts (the puncta). They are designed to help keep your eyes lubricated by preventing tears from draining too quickly.
Punctal plugs come in two types, temporary or dissolving, and permanent.
Depending on the root cause of your dry eyes, we may prescribe medicated eye drops to address your symptoms. Depending on how severe your dry eye is, we may prescribe eye drops that both lubricate the eye and stimulate tear production.

Great store. Their glasses are pretty cool, and the staff could not be more friendly and helpful – they all seem to enjoy working there, which translates into enthusiasm and genuine customer engagement. I honestly never thought eye care would actually be kind of fun. The opticians are terrific too. My vision is unusual, and they really took the time (e.g., several rounds of test contact lenses) to make sure my prescription was right. And they stick with you – I could not recommend Tom & Renee Engle more highly.
